Video assist is a sophisticated system comprising monitors, recorders, transmitters, switchers, IT and RF gear, and extensive cabling. The video assist crew, including the operator, assistant, cable technician, and trainee, manage setup, cable connections, and troubleshooting, often requiring a medium-sized truck to transport the equipment.
Their task involves establishing the video village, featuring a central cart and accessories, along with separate director's, producer's, and sometimes DP's monitors (though often handled by the DIT nowadays). Modern video assist encompasses signal management, recording, basic editing, visual effect previews, and streaming.
Director and secondary monitors serve various personnel, with smaller, private sets often requested by the director and DP. Hair, makeup, costume, and art department members can view streamed video on iPads, while off-set crew members can remotely watch and provide feedback over video streams.
